What did Debbie say about design
Short answer
Deliberate differentiation, nothing more.
Long answer
Early in my career, before I even knew design was a career, I saw it more as decorative. Then, probably by the nineties and two thousands, I began to see it more as a strategic tool. And now I see it more as a behavioral tool.
But I do think that, in many ways, design is very deliberate differentiation. While it is a tool, and you can use that tool in any number of ways, what is that tool doing? What is its ultimate purpose? I think it is to very deliberately differentiate one thing from another.
And designers owe the ability to communicate accurately to society. I don't know that anybody is excused from owing something to the society that gives them as much as it does.
