How should a young designer price their work?

Short answer

The map is the territory.

Long answer

Nobody knows what salary they should be getting at their level. Even best friends among designers don't talk about the salary thing. It is a taboo topic. And that silence creates a situation where nobody knows what the right number is. The deeper problem is structural. When you come from a creative agency, you are paid much lesser. So even if you do really well in an interview, the standard thing is: give your salary slips and take a 30% hike. But that doesn't account for what the role is actually worth. The company should know what the role they have created is worth, on their own. Just anchoring to the last CTC is a failure of imagination on their part. The interview process itself, if you do it right, can be a great self-learning exercise. You learn what you like, what options you have.
